"The time has come," the Walrus said,
"To talk of many things:
Of shoes — and ships — and sealing-wax —
Of cabbages — and kings —
And why the sea is boiling hot—
And whether pigs have wings."

"But wait a bit," the Oysters cried,
"Before we have our chat;
For some of us are out of breath,
And all of us are fat!"
"No hurry!" said the Carpenter.
They thanked him much for that.

Character History:

Abbreviated history. Most of this would be known ICly by any who care to pay attention to, well, firsties.

Sorrel is the only child of Ivy and Stephen Hazard of Hogsmeade. When she was just a baby, her mother was arrested on vague charges of aiding and abetting Death Eaters. She really doesn't know many of the details and her father refuses to talk about it. Then again, he doesn't tend to talk about much. An employee in the Department of Mysteries, he takes his job title of Unspeakable very much to heart and speaks very little.

Ever since her mother's abrupt departure from their lives, her father became both fiercely over-protective and indulgent of his little girl. While he was strict when it came to some things, particularly those he felt would lead to her growing up too fast or putting herself in any sort of danger at all, he also let her get away with murder. The poor Squib who was employed as her nanny learned early on that complaints about Sorrel's bratty behaviour would only fall on deaf ears.

Another thing her father has always insisted on is that Sorrel be well-informed, feeling that, above all else, knowledge is power. He expects her to learn a new fact each and every day, to be reported and questioned over dinner.

She wants to be a writer when she grows up, and perhaps thanks to her father's lessons, shows a keen interest in the world around her, to the point of getting downright annoying with her questions. She carries a leather-bound notebook with her and is always jotting down notes; the book is charmed to appear blank to any Nosy Parkers though.

Now eleven, she's received her letter from Hogwarts, which led her father to decide that she's too old for a nanny now, so she's enjoying some limited freedom for the first time in her life.

Personality

Sorrel has certainly taken her father's lessons to heart and become a very curious and inquisitive sort. She asks endless question and tries to keep track of the answers. She can sometimes give the impression of not really caring, though, despite the number of questions she keeps asking. It's more about collecting facts than actually learning things about people. She sometimes forgets her manners and can be bossy or pushy, with a tendency to just do what she wants even if someone asks or tells her not to. But she's generally at least somewhat clever in her breaking of rules and tries to always have a good story ready for when she gets caught. Of course, while it may be easier to beg forgiveness than ask permission, the best route is to not get caught at all!

Other Information

  • Wand: A 8" whippy wand made of vine wood with a unicorn tail hair core.

  • Best Class: Transfiguration
  • Worst Class: Herbology
  • Notebook: Sorrel carries a leather-bound notebook around, which she writes in all the time. It's charmed to keep snoops from being able to read it.
  • Points: She has the dubious honour of being the first person (or at least PC) to lose any house points in the 1994-1995 school year. Yay?

Description

Summer

Sorrel is tall for her age, though her age being so young, it doesn't make her horribly tall. She's got the sort of long, lanky figure that suggests she must have shot up like a reed not too long ago, the first - and only - sign of adolescence to show thus far. She has brown eyes, and auburn hair with enough natural wave to give it body and/or make it slightly frizzy depending on the weather. It's cut in a blunt, even cut just past her shoulders, and is usually pulled back on either side with a clip. Her features are long and narrow, with a few freckles across the bridge of her nose.

Not yet into her uniform, she tends to wear rather innocent, childish clothing, especially a lot of sundresses in pale colours. Her only piece of jewellery is a charm bracelet that dangles from one wrist. Her shoes are either leather sandals or mary janes with white, ruffled socks.

Vienna - Billy Joel

Slow down you crazy child. // You're so ambitious for a juvenile. // But then if you're so smart tell me why // Are you still so afraid? // Where's the fire, what's the hurry about? // You better cool it off before you burn it out. // You got so much to do and only // So many hours in a day.

Bring on the Wonder - Susan Enan

I fell through the cracks at the end of our street. // Let's go to the beach, get the sand through our feet. // Bring on the wonder, // Bring on the song. // I pushed you down deep in my soul for too long. // Bring on the wonder. //We got it all wrong. // We pushed you down deep in our souls for too long.

Some Say - Sum 41

Think before you make up your mind. // You don't seem to realize, // I can do this on my own. // And if I fall, I'll take it all. // It's so easy after all. // Believe me, 'cause now's the time to try. // Don't wait, the chance will pass you by. // Time's up to figure it out. // You can't say it's too late.
