Character History:

The year was 1960, and Britain and Ireland were still enjoying a relatively calm reprieve in the years between the fall of Grindelwald and the rise of He Who Must Not Be Named. On a snowy October morning Sechnall Swancoate was born in Limerick, the eldest of three siblings. His younger brother Taggart was not born for another seven years, so for a fair portion of his childhood Sechnall remained a single child. His parents doted on him as the heir to their good name - the Swancoates were an old and influential pureblooded family, and his father, a Ministry official in the Department of Mysteries, constantly reminded his son of the importance of protecting 'true' Wizarding culture from the mudbloods and pretenders.

Nevertheless, Sechnall seemed to have largely shrugged off most of this attitude by the time he started his career in Hogwarts. He was sorted into Ravenclaw rather than Slytherin, much to the disappointment of both of his parents, and was known during his years as a student as a bookish, mild-mannered sort. He graduated in the class just under that of the Marauders and Snape, generally unheard-of by any of them despite his pureblooded, wealthy roots. He was never particularly interested in Quidditch (one more thing his parents frowned upon), but he excelled in his academic studies. He was especially efficient in the art of potion-making, and had it not been for the recent graduation of Severus Snape he probably would have finished Hogwarts with the reputation of being a prodigy in the art and the best alchemist in decades. As it was, he was yet again overshadowed - and unnoticed. He finished with exceptional marks in most of his NEWTs (Astronomy: E, Charms: E, DAtDA: O, Herbology: O, History: A, Potions: O, Transfiguration: E, Ancient Runes: O, Divination: A), earning high enough scores to qualify for just about any Ministry position he wanted.

Again, he snubbed his parents' expectations by choosing a career as an Alchemist, and got a job as an apprentice in a popular Diagon Alley shop once he'd graduated. And he continued this course of life for the next twenty-odd years, eventually saving up enough money and becoming skillful enough to buy out the shop - which still retains its original tongue-in-cheek name of The Chaser - and run it himself. To all outward appearances this is all there is to Sechnall Swancoate: quiet, friendly, quirky potion-shop owner.

Most of the time Sechnall is friendly, well-mannered, and just a little on the odd side. He's well-regarded within the Wizarding community, although he's too shy and socially introverted to really make himself well-known to a lot of people outside of his shop.

Trivia and Notes:

  • Sechnall almost always wears gloves. Why? Well, maybe he just likes them.
  • He is considered to be one of the foremost alchemists and potion-brewing authorities in the Wizarding community - although perhaps to a lesser degree than the likes of Snape and Slughorn.
  • He looks very, very young for his age. Enough to make someone doubt whether it's merely a result of good luck.
  • Sometimes he stutters or has trouble speaking clearly, but never when focused or angry.
  • He graduated one year behind the Marauders.
