History
Like his two older brothers, Hillary was encouraged from an early age to make something great of himself. Like them, he took this advice to heart - and with a war on, what greater goal than to become an Auror? Their father would have done, if not for a relatively minor brush with wizarding law in his early teens (things were peaceful then, the Ministry could afford to be picky). And like them, he was promptly sorted into Slytherin, assuring himself that his ambition would see him through.
Unlike them, it didn't. Charms were easy, transfiguration was possible with hard work - but potions stumped him entirely too often. He still did well enough to pass his classes, but he wasn't even going to be let into the NEWT level until his parents cashed in some favors - to no avail, as his marks only continued to go downhill.
Forced to rethink his career at the beginning of his seventh year, he found that there were actually a number of viable options, he'd just been ignoring them out of single-mindedness. The subject that ended up tipping the balance was Muggle studies - he'd taken it as an elective a couple times, thanks to an unrequited interest in a girl one year his elder - leading to a competent if undistinguished career with the Muggle-Worthy Excuse Committee.
When Cornelius Fudge became Minister of Magic, Hillary began to play up their earlier departmental association - only to backpedal as Fudge's fortunes went south, protesting that he actually barely knew the man. Ironically, his career is still in better shape than either of his brothers; Bill was killed by Walden Macnair, while Simon traveled overseas one year and never came back. Besides his parents, his closest remaining family is his uncle Howard and aunt Suzanne, and their son Julian.
