Most of this is certainly available IC, if one were simply to ask him about it.
Alton Appleby was born in London on the 21st of November, 1978, the only child of Artemis and Alyson Appleby. A comfortably middle-class family, Artemis (a Cursebreaker by trade) and Alyson (a Muggle shop owner) did their best to raise their boy well, ensuring that he grew up with exposure to - and education about - both halves of his bloodline. With no signs of magical talent yet in evidence, he began his early education in a public Muggle school, with his father supplementing his education at home. Just in case.
Sure enough, by the time he was eight, Alton's magical talents presented themselves. Mercifully, they did so with only his family on-hand to witness it, leaving them with noone to explain the way the boy had jumped from a swing and not come down. Also mercifully, he was a bright enough and well-behaved enough boy that he understood why it was he needed to keep it secret from his friends at school, and did so without a complaint. As a reward for his good behavior, his mother bought him a guitar and signed him up for lessons, and the newfound creative outlet proved a rousing success not only with Alton himself, but with his friends.
His Hogwarts letter arrived right on time and, despite a brief bit of separation anxiety on the part of Alton and his mother, his career with the school began quite smoothly. He was sorted into Hufflepuff House, which suited him just fine, and he set about diving into his classes and making friends with his usual good-natured enthusiasm. Perhaps due to his very active and vivid imagination, he seemed almost a natural hand at Charms and Transfiguration, accepting the reality of magic with a kind of ease not often found in students with muggle heritage. He struggled with less creative classes such as History and Potions, however, and quickly learned to stubbornly soldier on through with his studies there to maintain decent grades.
Even with The Boy Who Lived's arrival at the school in his second year, Alton's own time at Hogwarts has been, for the most part, quite normal. He isn't entirely sure what he thinks of all of this 'He Who Must Not Be Named is back' stuff, but tends to fall into the school of thought where he sees no fault in being prepared… or in asking questions.
