Character Description

A tall and thin old man, Dumbledore's face is well-known amongst the wizarding world. Long white wavy hair cascades down his back, parted evenly in the middle, while a matching long white beard curls down his front, both long enough to tuck into his belt. One of his most distinguishing features are his bright blue eyes, often twinkling with some merriment. He's clad in ornate wizard's robes of a deep blue, with silver embroidery on the hems and cuffs. The boots that peek out of the bottom of the robes are a matching shade of blue with silver buckles on the calf. Around his waist is a grey leather belt, and a couple of blue leather pouches dangle from it. Perched on his silver hair is a hat in matching blue, dotted with silver stars and moons and comets. The very tip of a wand sticks out of a pocket in his robes, and there's often a scarlet and golden phoenix in his company.

Character History:

Albus Dumbledore was born in July or August of 1881 in Mould-on-the-Wold to Percival and Kendra Dumbledore, the eldest of three children. He is a half-blood, as his mother was Muggle-born. Tragedy began following the family when his youngest sibling, Ariana, was attacked by Muggles for a show of magic. She was left physically and mentally scarred and could no longer do magic, although she had fits where it would explode out of her. Albus lost his father when Percival refused to defend his reaction to Ariana's attack and went to Azkaban for retaliating against the Muggles that had pretty much destroyed his daughter. Kendra moved the family to Godric's Hollow and Albus helped take care of Ariana with his younger brother Aberforth and their mother. Invited to attend Hogwarts, Dumbledore was Sorted into Gryffindor in 1892 and racked up an astounding amount of knowledge and skills, enough that Griselda Marchbanks would later remark on his genius for magic. He also became Prefect and Head Boy, a rising star amongst the young wizards and witches of his generation. However, also during his time at Hogwarts, Ariana's rogue magic attacks wound up killing their mother, and Albus had to talk Aberforth out of dropping out of school to care for Ariana, deeming it his responsibility as head of household now, a responsibility that he resented.

Albus, however, was planning on a grand tour of the wizarding world with a friend named Elphias Doge, but those plans were set back when he met and was fascinated by a foreign wizard named Gellert Grindelwald. Albus could be said to have fallen for the charismatic wizard and began to listen to Grindelwald's plans to conquer the Muggle world and rule it, so incidents like Ariana's attack by Muggles would never happen again. He spent so much time listening to the visitor and desiring him that he began forgetting his responsibilities. Due to Albus' neglect for Ariana, Aberforth had a row with Albus and Grindelwald that escalated into a duel that left Ariana dead in 1899, and Aberforth broke his nose at her funeral. Grindelwald fled, and Albus came to his senses, both regarding Grindelwald's plans to rule the world and his own heart. He put aside the notion of ever finding love and decided to become a protector of both Muggles and wizards and anyone else who wanted a peaceful life. To that end, he eventually became a teacher at Hogwarts, teaching his favorite class, Transfigurations. He also befriended a phoenix named Fawkes during this time.

From approximately 1938, when he met Tom Riddle, until 1955, when he ascended to the post of Headmaster of Hogwarts, Dumbledore taught at the school and oversaw its students, while simultaneously serving on the Wizengamot and other wizardly committees and groups in excellent standing, making friends and allies along the way. When he invited Riddle to the school in 1938, he was disquieted by the boy's behavior, and he suspected Riddle to have had a hand in the death of Myrtle in 1945, arguing against Rubeus Hagrid's expulsion for the matter. Also in 1945, Dumbledore once more fought against his former love, their epic duel leading to Grindelwald's downfall and Dumbledore being honored with a chocolate frog card. In the mid fifties, Armando Dippet retired as Headmaster, and Albus was chosen to replace him. Dumbledore hired Minerva McGonagall to replace him as Transfiguration professor.

Things were quiet until a wizard going by the name of Voldemort began gathering followers, including old-family Slytherins such as Lucius Malfoy. To battle the oncoming darkness, Dumbledore gathered his own allies and dubbed them the Order of the Phoenix. Many dear friends lost their lives or were permanently damaged because of the first wizarding war, and it gave Dumbledore great sorrow. However, joy was found with a new crop of friends and acquaintances lent themselves to his cause, such as the Potters. The war continued, and still Hogwarts continued. Dumbledore was summoned to the Hog's Head to interview a potential teacher of Divination, and the woman was obviously a flake. However, as he was about to depart, she unknowingly gave a true Prophecy, a prophecy that has yet to be fulfilled, but it was of greatest importance to both Dumbledore and Voldemort. The Prophecy could have applied to two major families, and it was the fact that it likely involved the Potters, particularly Lily Potter nee Evans, that led to Severus Snape coming to Dumbledore and pledging his loyalty in return for Lily's protection against Voldemort's attempt to kill Lily's son, Harry. Despite Dumbledore's misgivings and volunteering to be their Secret Keeper himself, he cast the Fidelius Charm that set Peter Pettigrew to the role of Secret Keeper.

Disaster struck because of Pettigrew's betrayal, and Dumbledore could do nothing but save young Harry Potter and be sorrowfully grateful that Lily Potter's sacrifice had also given them all a respite from the terrorist activities of Voldemort and his followers, the Dark Lord being diminished and nearly destroyed. In the days following the fall of Voldemort, Dumbledore's followers were attacked by various Death Eaters, seeing to gain revenge for their master's fall and to also find news of him. It's then that Dumbledore publicly vouches for Snape in front of the Wizengamot, hiring for the staff of Hogwarts, but denying his desire to teach Defense Against the Dark Arts. He does, however, promise not to reveal why Snape defected from the dark side. A few years later, many voices demanded that Dumbledore take on the role of Minister of Magic because of his deep knowledge and the obvious fear that Voldemort's followers have of him, but Dumbledore didn't want the job. Now in the 90s, Dumbledore is spending his time watching the old Death Eaters for activity, gathering allies once more and re-establishing ties amongst wizardkind to help defend against the oncoming darkness. Since young Harry Potter has come to Hogwarts, he's given the boy James Potter's invisibility cloak and ensured he could survive and defeat the basilisk under Hogwarts and the spirit of young Tom Riddle trapped in a diary. During the Chamber of Secrets incident, Dumbledore was removed as Headmaster by the school's governors, acting on the malicious words and threats of Lucius Malfoy, but he was reinstated after it was proven who was responsible for the attacks happening on school grounds. It grieves him deeply that he has to prepare young Potter for the greatest test any young boy should ever have to endure, but yet he still doesn't want Harry to suffer needlessly, sheltering him as best he can against the darkness the young man will have to face. It's too soon.
